true correction vs.
While chiropractic is effective in providing relief from aches and pains,
we have found that correcting the spine can offer far greater long-term benefits.
This is why our office specializes in principled chiropractic care.
the difference between
principled chiropractic care and temporary relief is the
difference between optimal health
and just feeling good.
"There is a vast difference between treating effects and adjusting the cause."
- D.D. Palmer, DC, Founder of Chiropractic
Thanks to technological advances and a new understanding of the spine and nervous system, we are able to correct misalignments in the spine and document the changes using pre- and post x-ray analysis. Changes are achieved through a series of gentle, specific adjustments.
If we are able to accept your case, a care plan will be recommended based on the pre-existing levels of degeneration in your spine, your age, levels of activity and your response to the adjustment. We always start with a complementary consultation to discuss your potential for success at Awaken Chiropractic Center.
When a person seeks care and the doctor accepts their case, it is essential both are working toward the same goal.
Many western health care providers focus on a person's symptoms and the treatment or relief of those symptoms; this is the entire basis for relief care. Chiropractic care is very well known for its ability to resolve symptoms and is often referred to as "miraculous" in its ability to provide relief when other forms of health care have failed.
While there are many chiropractors who specialize and are successful in providing relief from symptoms, this was never its intended purpose. Chiropractic was designed as a principled form of health care when it was discovered over 120 years ago.
The sole objective of a principled chiropractor is to identify the underlying cause of an individual's health challenge and apply a specific adjustment to correct it.
A condition of the spine known as a Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC) interferes with the body's natural ability to regulate and coordinate all its functons and heal as designed. Principled chiropractors locate these VSCs by thoroughly analyzing its components, and design a individualized plan of action to correct the dysfunction.
Through empowerment and education about principled chiropractic and the chiropractic lifestyle, Dr. Robert and Dr. Victoria hope to help you and your family learn how to maintain a healthy spine and optimal health for years to come!
to appreciate and understand the importance of
principled chiropractic care, let's look at the
difference between "symptoms" and "warning signs."
Their difference is best understood through a brief comparison:
If someone injurs their ankle and they experience pain in that same ankle there is a direct relationship; the location of pain and the location of the injury are the same. This is an example of a symptom.
If a person is suffering from heart disease and experiences pain into their left arm, there is likely nothing wrong with the arm. It would be foolish to spend energy and resources treating the arm when the true cause of the pain is the heart. This is an example of a warning sign.
Now, apply those concepts to chiropractic:
When a vertebra in the spine misaligns and places pressure on the nerve going down your leg, you may experience leg pain, commonly called sciatica. This is a symptom. We could examine and treat the leg but would be doing so in vain as sciatica is a warning sign telling us of an underlying problem, usually found in the spine.
depending on which nerves in the spine are being affected by
vertebral subluxation will depend on the type of
warning sign the body may (or may not) produce.
There is often a significant time delay between the onset of subluxation and the first warning signs
because of our body's amazing ability to adapt to its internal and external environment.
If you have a pebble in your shoe, you don’t usually continue to walk on it;
you take off your shoe, and remove the source of the problem to relieve the pressure.
Your body behaves very similarly in relation to vertebral subluxation.
Very commonly, one of the first subluxations to occur happens at birth. Even during a natural, unassisted birth, anywhere between 60-90 pounds of pressure can be exerted on the small, malleable child. The vertebra, ligaments and muscles in a new-born baby's body are not strong enough to support the weight of their disproportionately heavy heads.
Compound the trauma of the birth process with seemingly small slips and falls as the child learns to roll, crawl, walk and ride their bike and the damage to the nervous system caused by subluxation begins to accumulate.
The body behaves intelligently by changing our posture in response to
physical, chemical and emotional stress.
Shifting the head in front of the shoulders and leaning the head to one side reduces the pressure subluxation places on the brain stem. As a result of the change in head position, the rib cage may bend or shift to reduce pressure on thoracic nerves and large muscles in the lumbar spine and pelvis may shift in an innate attempt to reduce residual unwanted pressure and tension throughout the nervous system.
with health and healing as the body's default, these shifts in spinal structure are less damaging than the immediate, devistating affects a larger or more direct pressure would have on the nervous system.
Improper posture puts pressure on vertebral discs and joints
and causes them to begin wearing out abnormally.
It is often not until the discs of the spine begin to wear significantly and the body loses its ability to adapt efficiently that we start seeing the intermittent warning signs related to subluxation.
Many times the first area of the spine to weaken and lose its ability to adapt is the lumbar spine. A majority of the forces exerted on the body impact the lumbar spine. Improper lifting techniques introduce challenges a healthy spine may be able to adapt to, but vertebral subluxation can cause degeneration as the spine continues to become weaker over time. Activities you used to do with ease may begin to become challenging and you may avoid them due to pain or discomfort.
Avoidance often results in additional degeneration. Don't ignore the warning signs your body is sending!
If your doctor begins treating your low back pain based on your symptoms, without thoroughly analyzing you for vertebral subluxations and the cause of your pain is actually due to a subluxation in your neck, you may notice temporarily relief of your low back pain but it will only be a matter of time before it returns. The pain in your low back was just a warning sign that something wasn't right; it didn't tell you where the real disfunction was!
Principled chiropractors specialize in the detection and correction of vertebral subluxation.

the winsor studies
can an unhealthy spine affect internal organs?
In the early 1900's, a medical doctor by the name Henry Winsor conducted an experiment based on chiropractors claim that reducing subluxation in a misaligned vertebra may relieve a patient of their symptom. Anything from upset stomach, menstrual cramps and thyroid conditions to kidney disease, constipation, heart disease, ulcers, lung disease, and other conditions could be positively affected by an adjustment made to a specific misalignment in the spine.
In this experiment, Dr. Winsor dissected both human and animal cadavers to study the relationship between a diseased internal organ discovered on autopsy and the vertebrae and nerves that supplied the organ. Dr. Winsor dissected 75 human and 72 cat cadavers and found a nearly 100% correlation between minor curvatures of the vertebrae and diseases of the internal organs.
All 20 cases with heart and pericardium conditions had misalignments in the upper five thoracic vertebrae (T1-T5).
All 26 cases of lung disease has spinal misalignments in the upper thoracic area.
All nine cases of stomach disease had spinal misalignment in the mid-thoracic area (T5-T9).
All 13 cases of liver disease had misalignments in the mid-thoracic area.
All five cases with gallbladder disease had spinal misalignments in the mid-thoracic area.
All three cases with pancreatic disease had spinal misalignments in the mid-thoracic area.
All 11 cases with spleen disease had spinal misalignments in the mid-thoracic area.
All 17 cases with kidney disease were out of alignment in the lower thoracic area (T10-T12).
The Prostate and Bladder
All eight cases with prostate disease had misalignments in the lumbar spine (L1-L5).
Two cases with uterine disease had misalignments of the second lumbar vertebra.
